My Mystery Seedling's Story

August 17, 2015

Here is the progression of the mystery seedling that grew out of the pot I
placed it in by the kitchen garden, wound its way up and onto the pergola
and beyond. It produced flower after yellow flower, but only two bore fruit.
Zucchini, yellow squash, cucumber, cantaloupe, watermelon, even loofah everyone who saw the blossoms and leaves hazarded an opinion on the pant's identity.

The first photo is of the first butternut squash. It grew and grew and when
I harvested it I mad

e a velvety, rich butternut squash soup garnished with a
swirl of Greek yoghurt and roasted pepitas (pumpkin seeds). Served slightly
warm or at room temperature it was delicious!

The top picture shows the other squash, which is still dangling down from the ed-blossomed jatropha tree. You can see from the cars below that it is quite big.

This has been such fun. Butternut squash is a cold weather squash and
normally doesn't grow here. Who knows what I'll find next in the compost.
