Gardenias – This was a spectacular year for gardenias. Cool weather and abundant rain ensured abundant long-lasting blooms. Now that the creamy flowers and their seductive perfume have vanished it’s time to care for your gardenia. Prune now or through September. Later pruning will reduce next year’s flowering. Remember that gardenias do best when not growing too close to other shrubs to reduce competition for nutrients and the spread of pests and disease. Strengthen your gardenia by mulching it heavily to maintain moisture and add organic content to sandy soil.
