FINDING COMFORT AND JOY IN THE GARDEN

FINDING COMFORT AND JOY IN THE GARDEN

“When the world wearies and society ceases to satisfy, there is always the garden.”

This sentiment, expressed by nineteenth-century poet Minnie Aumonier, is perfect for this unprecedented time in human history. With the advent of Covid-19 life for each of us abruptly changed. Our normal busy lives, filled with social engagements with others, came to a halt. Suddenly, we were isolated from normal contact with friends, neighbors, and even family. But, how fortunate we are to be in such a beautiful place. Nature and the garden offer solace and a way to find peace in a wonderful, soul-refreshing way. We have time to focus and appreciate things we might have missed during busier times such as the little native anole lizard (chameleon) I saw on the croton leaf above. As the sultry dog days of summer gradually give way to cooler weather it will be even more enjoyable to garden, so make your plans, start your seeds, plant seedlings, refresh annuals in the landscape and perhaps try something new. Here are some ideas.
